Eric Lijo – Little Artist

This week, we are in conversation with Eric Lijo, a 7 year old little boy studying in Grade2, from Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, the Keystone State.

Eric has been drawing and loving art since he was 4 years old. But art is not the only passion Eric has.

He is an all rounder! He loves gym, he has taken piano lessons and plays the guitar. Now, isn’t that just amazing for a 7 year old?

What do you like to draw the most?

“I love drawing houses.” We asked what was so special about houses and he said, “I like it. It’s very colorful and bright.”

And he remembered the ‘Beach Houses‘ project we did in our Trimester Art Course for Little Artists.

Eric knew about the artist spotlight blog and he was ready with his favorites from Nimmy’s Art. So he was quick to add about his favorite medium.

My favorite medium is…

Acrylic! It is very easy to blend the colors in acrylic.”

What about watercolor?

“Too much water makes the watercolor very light. So light!”

You are absolutely right, Eric.

Eric’s parents have known Nimmy for a long time. They had always wished for Eric to attend Nimmy’s art classes and learn from her. But it wasn’t possible as they were located far away from Katy, Texas.

The online class came as a boon to Eric and his family, and they immediately signed up for the art lessons.

Eric has been a student at Nimmy’s online art classes for the last 6 months and his parents are extremely happy with his progress. They added that it has helped him gain a strong foundation in the visual arts.

Which class at Nimmy’s Art did you like the most?

Eric pondered a little bit, and then got very excited when he realized which one it was.

“It’s the apples we did in acrylic!” His mother showed us the still life project he was talking about and his work looked so beautiful. He hasn’t tried painting any real life objects yet, but he is interested in doing it.

As our conversation progressed, and we started asking about his interests other than art, Eric had lots and lots to share with us.

What else do you like, other than art?

“Gym!” His face lit up as he said that. “I love running around a lot.”

“One time we played dragon tail, and if we lose we have to do jumping jacks or pushups, and things like that. I love that game!”

What else?

“And I love the piano. I actually completed the classical.” Bravo!

The list did not stop there.

“I also play guitar.” We couldn’t be more amazed!

So, Eric has his online school, in-person guitar classes, online gym, online art and piano lessons.

Wow! 7-year old kids are pretty busy these days!

Do you like online courses?

“Yes!” Eric says that he likes the in-person classes as well as the online classes.

In school, he learns through Google Classroom now, and his favorite subject is Math. He has discovered that the number line method is easier to do addition and subtraction.

His contentment with his medium of learning, be it online or in-person, reminded us of how resilient kids are, and how easily and quickly children adapt.

Eric has a little brother, Ritvik, who has taken to art after seeing his elder brother. They attend the classes together, and Eric helps Ritvik during the classes.

Ritvik enjoys being in the art classes with Eric and they enjoyed painting the cute turkey for Thanksgiving together.

We concluded our conversation with a pro-tip from our artist in spotlight.

Eric’s Art Tips

Tip 1:

“You can add water to make light colors in watercolor.”

Tip 2:

“Don’t use white in watercolor.”

These are very useful tips for anyone who wants to start working with watercolors.

We had a great time talking to Eric and his family, and by now, little Ritvik had started peeking in to see what was happening. Probably because he was hungry and it was dinner time there.

So we left them to their chores and bid adieu, looking forward to see both the boys in our classes in 2021.
